In the Game
77 minutes
Director: Maria Finitzo
Year: 2015
Country: USA

Fri 9:40 PM , Sat 12:40 PM RUSH , Sun 3:40 PM RUSH

Directed by Peabody Award-winner Maria Finitzo, Kartemquin Films’ latest documentary features a dedicated coach and his girls’ soccer team at a public high school in Chicago. Set in a predominantly Latino neighborhood, the girls face an uneven playing field — discrimination, poverty, problems at home, little or no outside support. Through their stories, the film reveals the enormous obstacles that low-income, inner-city girls confront, raising larger issues about public education in America. The value of mentorship and team building is emphasized as we follow three of the school’s star players into their first year of college, where they struggle to stay enrolled and out of poverty.
Director Maria Finitzo will be in attendance.

Director’s Statement: Maria Finitzo

When I began work on In the Game, I heard repeatedly that stories about immigrants and female athletes were “a hard sell.” I never gave up believing that there was an audience waiting for this film. In our country, who gets to play and who does not is a yardstick by which we measure how close we are to achieving the goals of a democracy — a level playing field for all, or in a word: equality. I stuck with this film, through the good times and bad, because I believe deeply in the endless possibilities that come with the word “inclusion.”
