A man struggles to condense the history of the world onto a device with limited memory before the Earth is destroyed by aliens. The product of 2,000 handmade pencil drawings, the film is comic but also touching and surreal, and leaves us pondering some big questions: What is important in life? What should be remembered?

Sophie and Pete are neighbors — and kind of friends — who live in a generic apartment complex in Los Angeles. Sophie decides to take a road trip with Pete to pick up his sister from college in Phoenix. A not-so-humorous encounter with some roadkill leads to a joke about marriage, and somehow they get engaged. On the way home, their car breaks down and they get stranded in a peculiar little desert town, where Pete’s sister goes missing with a guy she meets in a bar. Suddenly lost and dependent on each other, Sophie and Pete learn that falling in love after you get engaged can be a lot scarier than getting married. Starring Matt Mider and Noël Wells (Saturday Night Live). [mature]

Requiem for Romance Trailer from Jonathan Ng on Vimeo.

A modern-day couple’s secret love affair comes to a bittersweet end during an evening phone call. Cell phone static creates distance between them as they anguish over the details of their relationship. But the visuals of the film reveal something entirely different: the animated reimagining of themselves as martial arts warriors in feudal China, where family influence, cultural pressures, and their desire for adventure make a different kind of sense. In this dream-like short film, love goes to war over art.

In the middle of a muddy field, blanketed by fog, an annual Mardi Gras celebration in rural Louisiana takes place. “Rougarouing” is the Cajun term for “dangerous carousing.” Striking black and white cinematography enhanced with bold splashes of color captures folks as they don strange masks and dress like medieval carnival jesters, readying themselves to partake in the music, madness, whiskey, whips, and gumbo.
