Elias is a young Chilean man devastated by the sudden death of his free-spirited and artistic boyfriend Sebastian. By himself in the predawn pall of the Atacama Desert, Elias lets out a howl of anguish and builds a small shrine in the place where Sebastian died. Driven onward by grief and need, he undertakes, alone, the journey they had planned to take together to Patagonia, the “end of the world,” reliving his relationship through the pages of Sebastian’s journal. The long, winding geography of Chile — exquisite and rarely seen vistas of a dazzling land — are his constant companion. Featuring a live improvised score by Rozalind MacPhail.

This project has been the most intense because every step of the process had to allow for the added uncertainty of a live score. The idea of different musicians improvising their own score was a commitment that influenced and informed every choice in making this film — from writing and shooting, through editing and sound design. There was no way the live score could be a gimmick, it needed to be intrinsically woven into the fabric of the film so that it became essential. He Hated Pigeons deals with letting go. Life is uncertain. Filmmaking is uncertain. And, I want the audience to feel something that has its own intrinsic impermanence. So every public presentation will be a one-time-only event.
Musician Rozalind MacPhail Experience this narrative feature with a live, improvised score performed by classically trained flutist and multi-instrumental looping artist Rozalind MacPhail. She intoxicates audiences with her fusion of electronica, classical, and jazz performed to film via Ableton Live software and her laptop. Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Rozalind is a ECMA and MusicNL award nominee.
