Varsity 1 - Mon 6:00 pm (4/6)
The directors of Half Nelson explore culture shock in this unconventional look at one immigrant's story. Sugar follows the idiosyncratic journey of 19-year-old Miguel Santos, a.k.a. Sugar, a Dominican pitcher from San Pedro De Macorís, struggling to make it to the big leagues and pull himself and his family out of poverty.

Miguel finally gets his break when he's recruited to play minor league baseball in Iowa; but when his performance on the mound falters, he begins to question the single-mindedness of his life's ambition. As his dream begins to fall apart, Miguel decides to leave baseball to follow another kind of American dream. His odyssey finally brings him to New York City, where he struggles to find community and make a new home for himself, like so many before him. Sugar examines and redefines what it means to chase after the American dream. Closing Night Film. [adult content, language]
