The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey investigating gas drilling practices and the results, including a Pennsylvania town which reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. In region after region across the country, Fox documents evidence of pollution and contamination caused by drilling methods that have been exempted from the standards required by the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. He encounters EPA whistleblowers, congressmen, world renowned scientists, and stories of people fighting against "fossil fuel giants for environmental justice"; and questions the industry's portrayal of the fuel as clean energy. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary: Feature.
