Fiction and documentary blend into one in this lyrical, transformative, and deeply personal film. Petra was just seven when her older sister, Elena, nineteen at the time, left Brazil to study acting in the United States. Two decades later, with only a few clues — home movies, newspaper clippings, a diary — Petra follows her to New York City. At any moment, Petra expects to find Elena walking the streets. Gradually, the features of the two sisters merge; we no longer know one from the other. When Petra finally finds Elena in an unexpected place, she must learn to let her go. Like the haunting opening music set to the opening credits, the film is a beautiful and melancholy tribute — “Dedicated to the One I Love.” [subtitles]
