A fascinating blend of Klamath Tribes’ history and customs, intercut with Peter Britt’s photography and its notable effect on Crater Lake preservation, accompany the majestic music and its breathtaking setting.
Director’s Statement

When I heard about the Britt Festival’s plan to commission an original orchestral score and perform it at the edge of Crater Lake, I knew it would be an extraordinarily cinematic way to explore the relationships between music, nature, and human beings. I’m thrilled that the movie offers a unique perspective on the drum music of the Klamath tribes and their intense spiritual relationship to Crater Lake, known to them as “giiwas.”

If a crime is committed in order to prevent a greater crime, is it forgivable? Is it, in fact, necessary? The Reluctant Radical follows environmental activist Ken Ward as he confronts his fears and takes direct action against the fossil fuel industry to combat climate change. Ken’s journey to radical activism is interspersed with news footage and courtroom scenes surrounding his many protests. The film reveals the fulfillment he finds in his moral calling, even though it means breaking the law. But it comes at a great personal cost—close relationships and even his mental health are at risk. We are left to wonder: is he the one out of touch with reality? Or is the rest of society delusional for not acting when faced with the unsettling evidence that we are collectively destroying the world?

Director’s Statement

I’ve long had nagging feelings of guilt and futility when it comes to climate change and my first conversation with Ken quickly zeroed in on my discomfort. He had a powerful yet simple message: the world is ending, and we’re pretending that it’s not happening. Within 18 months of that conversation, I found myself staring down three felony charges after filming Ken take direct action to stop the flow of tar sands oil. The charges (now dropped) were designed to intimidate and disrupt my work, but the effect was the opposite. There is no turning back.
