Every third Monday of the month, two sisters, Rachel and Cynthia, open their salon to women undergoing chemotherapy. Determined to make their customers feel beautiful, they know each day’s challenge goes beyond painted toes or the right haircut. Empty bottles and cans — each discarded container worth five cents at the redemption center. Redemption is about New York City’s “canners” — the unemployed men and women whose new profession is redeeming bottles and cans they collect in the richest city in America.
