Synopsis
AIFF14 Lifetime Achievement honoree Barbara Kopple’s groundbreaking and timeless 1976 Academy Award®–winning documentary is an unforgettable portrait of striking coal miners in a small Kentucky town and the harsh working conditions and tenacious spirit of a community that refused to back down. With unprecedented access, Kopple and her crew captured the miners’ sometimes violent struggles with strikebreakers, local police, and company thugs. Featuring a haunting soundtrack — with legendary country and bluegrass artists Hazel Dickens, David Morris, Merle Travis, Sarah Gunning, and Florence Reece — the film is a heartbreaking record of the struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line.
