Monk with a Camera follows the improbable life of photographer and Buddhist monk Nicholas “Nicky” Vreeland, grandson of fashion icon and Vogue magazine editor Diana Vreeland and son of European diplomats. A blue-blooded jet setter in the 1960s, he learned photography as an assistant to both Irving Penn and Richard Avedon. In the late 1970s, Nicky met the venerable Buddhist teacher Khyongla Rato Rinpoche, founder of the Tibet Center in New York, and studied under him for years before becoming a Buddhist monk himself. When the Dalai Lama appointed him as abbot of Rato Dratsang monastery in India, he told him, “Your special duty is to bridge Tibetan tradition and the Western world.” The traveling exhibition of Vreeland’s renowned black and white photographs of Tibet has done just that, raising $500,000 to rebuild the medieval and historic Rato Dratsang.
