Rich Hill, Missouri, population 1,393; 70 miles south of Kansas City, 15 miles east of the Kansas border. Once a thriving mining town, Rich Hill today has a sizable jobless population and many vulnerable families. A story echoed in towns across America, Rich Hill is a rare, intimate look at the struggles, hopes, and dreams of three boys: Andrew, 13, who calls his family “gypsies” because they move every few months, often with only the clothes on their back; Harley, 15, who yearns for his imprisoned mother while living with his grandmother and eight members of his extended family; and Appachey, 12, who vies for attention even if it means getting violent. Poverty, absent parents, and challenges at school don’t stop the boys from longing for a brighter future.
